About Smudge
All cultures around the world have burned herbs for many kinds of ceremonies, in shells, ceramic containers, or on flat rocks in a fire. “Smudge” is the term describing a mixture of herbs used for ceremony by the people who have lived on this land for thousands of years. Incense is similar, but is a chemically altered version of herbal ingredients. With smudge, we use the traditional method of burning dried herbs directly without processing.
Most herbs burned have unique scents, which can positively affect the brain (this is the basic principle of aromatherapy, but with less toxic substances.) They are also said to have specific spiritual properties, such as the ability to clear rooms and auras of negative energy.
Smudge is burned in a fire-safe container such as a shell or ceramic ash tray (free of cigarette residue, which can be toxic).
I use a long fireplace lighter for easiest lighting of the herbs.
